Creating economic development opportunities to better peoples’ lives

East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation (EANDC) is a key partner in changing the commercial landscape of Akron. Our goal is to build opportunities for families so they can work close to home—it’s both an economically and environmentally sound strategy for our community.

East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation succeeded in bringing a full service supermarket to the East Akron community in 2004.  Middlebury, one of Akron’s oldest neighborhoods, had been without a major supermarket since the closure of the Acme-Click store in 1994. Today the 67,000 square foot shopping center, Middlebury Market Place is the first inner-city retail center to open in four decades.

The success of Middlebury Market Place has created hundreds of jobs for area residents and a neighborhood center where families can shop for goods and services. This project has achieved wide widespread recognition as a model for fueling economic opportunity through brownfields redevelopment.
